Every winter, freighters from across the Great Lakes come to Sturgeon Bay in Door County, Wisconsin to get needed repairs and upgrades at Bay Shipbuilding. It’s a lot of fun to see these ships, some as large at 1,000+ feet, come through our small town. It’s quite impressive to see the ships, aided by a fleet of local tugs, maneuver in to the shipping canal and through our three bridges.
In February 2020, I was out flying my drone around downtown Sturgeon Bay. I thought it would be cool to send the drone over to take a couple of photos of these freighters. For this shot, titled “Sleeping Ships”, I positioned the drone towards the bow of the Edgar B Speer who was docked among a few other ships.
My aim for this photo was to try to convey the size of these ships from a new angle that they aren’t normally seen.
