Are you thinking of popping the question? Do you love Door County? Well Door County would be a fantastic place to propose. This special moment in your lives will be even more memorable when you have the beautiful backdrop of the peninsula as your setting. We have no shortage of beautiful locations perfect for proposing but I am going to help you narrow it down by sharing three ideas for making your Door County proposal a perfect one.
Cave Point County Park
Cave Point County Park in Jacksonport is one of my favorite places in Door County. The cliffs along the shore of Lake Michigan are a stunning landscape. Imagine standing out on a giant rock sticking out in to the lake and getting down on your knee while waves crash around you. It will be a great setting for this big moment.
There are a few places you can go while at the park. From the parking area, going to the shore and towards the left will lead you to the main viewpoint in the park. This is always a good spot but there will likely be a crowd there. If you’re cool with that then, great!
However, if you are looking for a more secluded and private place you can go explore a bit. The trail to the left will lead to a rocky beach usually littered with cairns that can be neat. But my suggestion would be to head down the trail to the right of the parking lot past the gazebo. This trail is long and goes all the way to Whitefish Dunes State Park. You can go as far as you wish down this trail. There are a few cool views along the way that would be nice. Plus you will have more privacy down this way.
Ephraim has an old dock with a really old warehouse on it that now serves as an art gallery. There is no better place in the county, in my opinion, to watch a sunset than at Anderson Dock. You get a stunning view of the bay of Green Bay as the sun sets out past Horseshoe Island and Eagle Point. It’s absolutely stunning and it would be a great place for a Door County proposal!
Don’t forget some paint! The best part of choosing Anderson Dock for this occasion is that you can then immortalize the memory by painting your names on the side of the warehouse. You’ll notice this barn is covered with names and this is encouraged. Imagine coming back in the future and going back to the very spot you proposed and see your names still there.
They do pain over the names after the walls get covered up but it isn’t very often and your names will likely be up for at least 5-10 years.
If Door County is known for one thing, that would be our cherries. In the springtime, usually sometime between mid-May and early-June, the vast cherry orchards burst with beautiful white cherry blossoms. These flowers cover the trees and make for an absolutely beautiful proposal. I can speak to this personally as I proposed to my wife in a cherry orchard during peak bloom.
Cherry blossoms can be found all over the peninsula. Especially along Highway 42 between Sturgeon Bay and Ellison Bay.
Memorialize Your Door County Proposal
Any of these three suggestions would help make for a beautiful moment. Now that you’ve chosen your perfect spot, how cool would it be to have this moment documented to show your future kids, grand-kids, etc? I would love to do a candid proposal photoshoot that you’ll always have to look back on. How this works is I will wait for you and your significant other at the location you chose. I will stay out of the way and blend in to the area as any normal tourist would, but I’ll have my camera ready. When you are ready to pop the question I will be taking photos the entire time.
After the big moment, you can point me out and we can do a quick mini portrait session. The joy and surprise I’ve seen when they learn they’ll have professional pictures of this special time is always really nice to see. It would be a perfect surprise and great engagement gift to your new fiance.
